Mimi - British Barn Owl
From the outset this is a sad story of neglect however this story unlike so many does have a happy ending!
Mimi was born in captivity but unfortunately didn't get a very good start in life. When Emma first saw her she was being kept in a small plastic box with a grill placed over the top to keep her in. The box was on the floor so everyone she saw was looming over her and it did not provided enough height for her to stand up fully. As if this was not bad enough the box looked like it had never been cleaned. It was therefore little wonder that she reacted aggressively to everything she saw. As a result her aggression her owner said she was so vicious and aggressive she was no good to anyone and he would put her down.
Emma crouched down to talk to her and after a while, she put her head on one side and looked at her, she didn't hiss or flip onto her back and try and grab her with her claws as she had at the start, she just listened. It was in that few seconds Emma saw what everyone else sees now. Unfortunately Emma walked away that day and left her there, but a few days later after sleepless nights Emma decided that she had to help her and that’s when the hard work started!
She was terrified of everything; she had lived in a box and only seen up! Emma’s patience finally paid off when she finally managed to get her to sit with her but Mimi needed more time than she had to give her. In order to make more time for the two of them to get to know each other and build up Mimi’s trust she attached leather shoulder pads to a jacket and a ring to the pocket and attached Mimi to her. Mimi lived on her shoulder for about 3 months they went everywhere together, shopping, work, even sleeping together! She slowly began to trust Emma, and gained confidence so she could enjoy sights, sounds and most importantly people.
Nearly 13 years on she is a stunning Barn Owl who works with all different types of people. She has flown in all sorts of environments and we are now offering Mimi’s talents to the best man as she will fly the wedding rings down to the bride and groom as an extra special delivery on their wedding day!
All Emma’s hard worked has really paid off and she is truly grateful that fate, destiny brought them both together.
It is sad to think what may have happened to this stunning bird if she hadn't found her when she did. Though one thing is certain she would never have been loved the way she is now not only by Emma but all who have the privilege to meet her.
